Artwork by Natasha Burns

Natasha Burns, Sea of Decay, enamelled copper vessel

"I am inspired by natural landscapes, coastlines and what can be discovered within them which I capture in expressive ink drawings, using a limited palette.  I translate this on to enamelled copper vessel forms. I relish the duality of perfection and imperfection that occur within natural forms. Wasp nests, bee hives and unusual fungi are my inspiration for the hand pierced elements that encase and grow over the enamelled vessels, emulating how nature reclaims objects."

Painting by Huw JanesHuw Janes, Alabama, oil on canvas. Painting derived from the John Coltrane composition of the same name, from the album 'Live at Birdland', 1963.

"I design geometric colour compositions which respond to specific pieces of music. each painting is a distinct “performance” of its aural counterpart - this performance then becomes part of an on-going dialogue between previous versions of the same composition, as well as with paintings of entirely different compositions. Simultaneous contrast, tonal and rhythmic intervals are vital to my designs, as are assimilation, successive contrast, gradation, repetition, inversion and counterpoint."

Painting by Millie MidgleyMillie Midgley, Reflecting on January the 2nd

"The face is the first thing we recognise about someone. We are the sum of all the same features and as a portrait artist, I am fascinated with how these are knitted together to make us individual. I have produced an autobiographical project as my way of articulating significant experiences that would normally be lost in time. The three paintings are in honour of my grandma who passed away on the 2nd January and depict individual emotions. The fragmented nature of the clustered composition suggests a narrative of loss within a family."

Painting by Andrew SalesAndrew Sales, L, Bubble

This painting investigates some broader issues concerning the university campus of Loughborough. The campus is expressed as a form of insular bubble, separated and isolated from the outside area, but sublime almost to the point of being overwhelming. Compositionally, L, Bubble is based on old maps; such as The Fra Mauro map. The surface and brushwork of the painting are  influenced by Vincent Van Gogh, but also by contemporary painters; Nigel Cook and Ged Quinn who invent symbolic, universal mythologies within their image's. This is realised in L, Bubble with the symbols in the painting being aimed at certain aspects of Loughborough Student life.

Ceramic & monoprint by Hannah Tounsend

Hannah Tounsend, Traversing the Line, print vessel: porcelain in front of monoprint

"This collection explores the layered landscapes and sea-washed, weatherworn surfaces of the British coastline.

Marks, lines and diffuse merging colours are built up, cut through and dissolved away. The repeatedly worked surfaces of clay and print are under constant revision, referencing the endless remaking of the shore."
